Description

Original manuscript containing the transcription in Arabic of a number of texts recorded among the «fellāḥ» in Ṭanṭa by Sayyid Aḥmed.  These texts were recited and/or sung on the occasion of the most important moments of the community, such as circumcision, engagement, marriage, death, the passage of the seasons, and pilgrimage. Each text was transcribed in Arabic by Sayyid Aḥmed in pencil and later transliterated (and translated in part) by Paul Kahle in black ink. The texts were recorded consecutively; between one and the other, Sayyid Aḥmed noted some indications concerning the performance of each. Among the texts, Paul Kahle edited the text on the dirge “Die Totenklage im heutigen Ägypten” mentioned as text “B”.
