Introduction
- This series contains documents pertaining to the scientific activity of Paul Kahle jr (1923-1955), Paul Ernst Kahle’s son.
Paul jr, a Coptologist, is most widely known for his edition of Coptic texts from the Egyptian monastery of Deir el-Balaʾizah. The archive houses a part of his papers relating to this research, as well as the final publication, with notes and comments by Paul Eric himself, on Paul E. Kahle, Balaʾizah: Coptic texts from Deir el-Balaʾizah in Upper Egypt (London, 1954). His papers are in part held in the Archive of the Griffith Institute in Oxford: www.griffith.ox.ac.uk.
Although this was his main scientific achievement, due also to his early death, the archive also houses other documents relating to his scientific activity in other fields. The Fonds is divided into six sub-series:
Correspondence: letters received and sent by Paul;
Coptic: it includes descriptions and transcriptions of texts of Deir el- Balaʾizah, drafts of the publication, and notes, as well as the final publication with unpublished notes and comments by Paul Eric himself, on Paul E. Kahle, Balaʾizah: Coptic texts from Deir el- Balaʾizah in Upper Egypt (London, 1954);
Greek: various scientific documents relating to his studies in this filed;
Hebraica: transcriptions and collations of texts, notes from lessons and lectures;
Islamica: mostly notebooks with notes from lessons on Arabic history and grammar.
Varia: this sub-series includes various scientific documents, such as transcriptions of texts, collations and notes on various subjects.
