Description
- Various notebooks containing manuscript notes on a range of subject-matters that Paul Kahle took on over time. The notebooks are black or of the “Deutsche Schule, Kairo” type, and are of various sizes. Kahle (and, rarely, a second hand) wrote notes both in pencil and black ink and occasionally added a few drawings. The notes generally relate to various field research projects of Kahle (in particular to folklore, magic, amulets, labour camps, various handmade objects). Hence, it is evident that most of these notes were taken during his stay in Egypt. The notebooks also contain notes of readings on various other topics (such as history and Islam), bibliographical references and linguistic annotations of various kinds. In some, Kahle wrote down long lists of Arabic terms relating to specific topics. He copied excerpts of works in transcription or parts of texts directly in Arabic, and even a few grave inscriptions.
