Introduction

The sub-series “History” contains a considerable quantity of documents concerning the history of Islamic civilization, collected by Kahle in the course of his studies and researches as a scholar. The documents belonging to this sub-series have been divided into various sub-sub-series based on the historical period to which each pertains. Thus, the sub-sub-series are: “Mamluk period” corresponding to the Mamluk sultanate in Egypt (1250-1517), “Fatimid period”, with only three units of description, corresponding to Fatimid caliphate in Egypt (909-1171), and “Ottoman period” corresponding to the period in which Egypt was under the direct control of the Ottoman Empire (1517-1867). The bulk of the documents deal with the history of Egypt, and most of them are interwoven with research and publications of the sub-series “Literature” (i.e. Shadow Play) and “Geography” (i.e. Pīrī Re’īs).
