Introduction

The sub-sub-series contains a huge amount of documents and it is divided into the topics on which Kahle has been involved in his studies. In some respects, this historical period is crucial in the studies made by Kahle. In fact, the Arabic Shadow Play develops (especially in Egypt) during this period. The same historical sources of the period, particularly Ibn Iyās, have provided a large amount of important historical evidences about the description contained in the individual plays. Equally important are the historical sources of this period in order to clarify relations and links between different subjects studied by Kahle, such as the history of the city and the lighthouse of Alexandria (Egypt) and the social and historical phenomenon of the «futuwwa» (lit. “young-manliness” or “chivalry”). This sub-sub-series is thus divided into the sub-sub-sub-series devoted to the “Futuwwa” and the history of “Alexandria” – a topic widely covered both in the “Literature” and “Geography” series – as well single works of a few major “historians” of this period, such as al-Maqrīzī (1364–1442) and Ibn Iyās (1448-1522).
