Introduction

As regards the sub-sub-sub-series “Futuwwa”, the archive contains preparatory studies and drafts of various research initiatives undertaken by Kahle and other scholars with whom he was in contact, such as Taeschner, that deal with «futuwwa» (litt. “young-manliness” or “chivalry”), a Sufi term that has some similarities to chivalry and virtue. It has become customary to use this term to denote various ethical urban movements and organizations which were to be found until the beginning of the modern era throughout the communities of the Muslim East. In particular Kahle wrote two main articles on this topic, “Ein Futuwwa-Erlass des Kalifen en-Nāṣir aus dem Jahre 604 (1207)” (1932) and “Die Futuwwa-Bündnisse des Kalifen en-Nasir (+ 622/1225)” (1933). The sub-sub-sub-series preserves the drafts as well other documents on the topic, such as the Arabic translation by the German-Moroccan scholar Muḥammad Taqi-uddin al-Hilālī of the article, various photographic reproductions of the manuscripts translated by Kahle in his studies, and eighteen pages reproducing the entire text of «Tuḥfat al-waṣāyā» by Ilyās al-Ḫataburtī studied by Taeschner (1932) and published in facsimile with Turkish translation by A. Gölpınarlı («Islam ve Türk illerinde fütüvvet teşkilatı ve kaynakları», Istanbul 1952).
