- الجغرافيون التركية العثمانية
Introduction
- This sub-sub-series contains many documents relating to various topics of study on which Kahle worked for many years. Alongside the edition of Pīrī Re’is’s «Kitāb-i Baḥriyye», cataloguing of the manuscripts of the Chester Beatty Library has also, over the years, broadened out the study of Turkish-Ottoman historical and geographical sources on China. This field of study involved Kahle for many years, and the bulk of the documents shows his varied and numerous interests. The sub-sub-series is therefore divided into various sub-sub-sub-series each containing documents associated with a specific author, work or topic. The archive also preserves various other documents and reproductions of manuscripts studied by Kahle, such as Ms Oxford, Bodleian, “Pococke 15”, that preserves Ḥāǧǧī Muḥammad Reʼīs Darayā’s «Risālat Tuḥfat al-Asrār fī ṭarīq al-biḥār», Abū al-‘Abbās Aḥmad b. Yaḥyā Ṯaʻlab’s «Kitāb Iḫtiyār Faṣīḥ al-kalām», and Kātib Čelebī’s «Jihān-nāma» (“Mirror of the World”), a geographical work that makes use for the first time, in Turkey, of European atlases and other sources.
