Introduction
- The sub-sub-sub-series preserves all of the documents relating to Paul Kahle’s edition of the «Kitāb-ı Baḥriyye» by Pīrī Re’īs (published as Piri Re’is, «Bahrije. Das türkische Segelhandbuch für das Mittelländische Meer Vom Jahre 1521», 2 vols., Berlin-Leipzig 1926), from the photographic copies of the manuscripts used for the edition to the drafts of the printed copy in Kahle’s possession. The sub-sub-sub-series contains furthermore preliminary studies, drafts and proofs of the important publication «Die verschollene Columbuskarte von 1498 in einer türkischen Weltkarte von 1513» (Berlin-Leipzig 1933; with further materials and new discoveries by Kahle) and of various articles dealing with Pīrī Re’īs’s «Kitāb-ı Baḥriyye» and his map, such as “Pīrī Re’īs und seine Bahrije” (1929), “Impronte Columbiane in una carta turca del 1513” (1931), “Un mapa de America hecho por el turco Pīrī Re’īs, en el año 1513” (1931), “Nautische Instrumente der Araber im Indischen Ozean” (1933), and “A lost Map of Columbus”. The materials, relating to editions and articles, are all stored in multiple copies.
