Introduction
- The sub-sub-sub-series contains documents relating to the two major historians of this period, al-Maqrīzī and Ibn Iyās. In regard to al-Maqrīzī, Kahle used «al-Mawā’iẓ wa al-iʻtibār fī dhikr al-khiṭaṭ wa-āthār» (Būlāq 1854, 2 vols.) as well as other works, as sources for many articles. The Archive preserves notes and excerpts by Kahle on these works. In regard to Ibn Iyās, Kahle edited a volume of Ibn Iyās’ «Chronicle» (in Ar. «Badā’iʻ al-zuhūr fī waqā’iʻ al-duhūr»), in collaboration with Muḥammad Muṣṭafā. The edition of the Arabic text was edited in the Bibliotheca Islamica series as «Die Chronik des Ibn Ijas, in Gemeinschaft mit Moritz Sobernheim hrsg. von Paul Kahle und Muḥammad Muṣṭafā» (respectively vol. 4-5-3, Leipzig-Istanbul 1931-32-35). The sub-sub-sub-series preserves many documents relating to the various phases of the work: the drafts of the preliminary studies on the author and the manuscripts by Kahle, his introduction to the Chronicle, the entire Arabic edition’s drafts of the text edited by Muḥammad Muṣṭafā and Kahle, various parts in translation into German and English, and an item of correspondence relating to this topic. Also significant are the printed copies of the Chronicle in Kahle’s possession, now preserved in the archive, since they contain further annotations by Kahle useful for historians of this period. The sub-sub-sub-series includes further documents of importance that reproduce indices and the glossary of the Chronicle by Ibn Iyās, which were not published by Kahle.
