Introduction
- This sub-sub-sub-series preserves the preliminary study and the drafts of an inedited study by Kahle relating to an important treatise by Abū Bakr b. Bahrām al-Dimašqī as in the version preserved in Ms Dublin, CB, A.S. no. 575. The sub-sub-sub-series preserves various drafts of the typescript by Kahle entitled “The Geography of Abū Bekr Behram Ad-Dimashkī”. Al-Dimašqī translated into Turkish the famous «Atlas Maior» of Joan Blaeu, a work published in Amsterdam between 1662 and 1672, that contained 594 maps and around 3000 pages of text. The «Atlas Maior» was the largest and most expensive book published in the seventeenth century. Al-Dimašqī published his translation under the title «Nuṣrat al-Islām wa-al-surūr fī taqrīr-i Atlas Māyūr», and based on it, with the further use of other, especially, Oriental sources, produced a “Major Geography” («Ǧuġrāfiyā-yi kebīr»).
